What to Expect at Your First Osteopathy Appointment

Booking your first osteopathy appointment can feel like a leap into the unknown, especially if you are already in pain. What will happen? What should you wear? Will it hurt? Here is exactly what to expect when you visit us in Hungerford, so you can arrive feeling relaxed rather than apprehensive.
The conversation comes first
Your first appointment begins with a thorough case history. We will ask about your current problem, but also your general health, medical history, work, activity levels and lifestyle. This matters because pain in one area often has contributions from elsewhere, and because it helps us make sure osteopathy is right for you. If we think you need to see your GP or another professional first, we will tell you honestly.
The assessment
Next we will look at how you move. That usually means observing your posture and asking you to perform some simple movements, followed by gentle hands-on examination of the joints and muscles involved. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in. You will never be asked to undress further than you are comfortable with, and we will explain everything before we do it.
Diagnosis, treatment and a plan
Once we understand what is going on, we explain it in plain English: what we think is causing your symptoms, how we can help, and roughly how long recovery may take. In most cases treatment begins in the first session, using techniques suited to you, from soft tissue work and joint mobilisation to gentler cranial approaches.
Allow around 45 minutes to an hour for your first visit
Bring details of any medications or recent scans and reports
Expect a clear plan, including simple exercises or advice to take home
Ask anything. Truly, we have heard it all and we love a curious patient
Afterwards
Some people feel a little tender for a day or so after treatment, similar to post-exercise ache, and then notice things easing. We will always tell you what to expect and when we would like to see you again, with no pressure and no endless treatment plans. Just honest care, from your first visit onwards.
