Living Well with Osteoarthritis: Staying Active and Comfortable

If you have been told you have osteoarthritis, you may also have been told there is nothing to be done beyond painkillers and waiting. We would like to respectfully disagree. While osteoarthritis cannot be reversed, how it feels and how much it limits your life can change enormously with the right approach.
Understanding osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting the cartilage and tissues within a joint, most often the knees, hips, hands and spine. The old image of joints simply wearing out is outdated. Modern understanding treats it as a whole-joint process influenced by load, muscle strength, activity levels, sleep, stress and general health. That is genuinely good news, because many of those factors can be improved.
Symptoms typically include stiffness after rest, aching with or after activity, and flare-ups that come and go. Crucially, the amount of change on an X-ray often bears little relation to how much pain someone feels.
How osteopathy helps
Gentle hands-on treatment to ease stiffness, reduce muscle guarding and improve joint comfort
Individual exercise plans to strengthen the muscles that support and cushion your joints
Advice on pacing activity, managing flare-ups and staying confident in movement
Support with the surrounding areas, because a stiff hip changes how a knee and back behave
Movement is medicine
The strongest evidence for managing osteoarthritis points to one thing again and again: appropriate movement. Joints are nourished by motion, and the right kind of activity reduces pain rather than causing damage. Our job is to find your right kind, whether that is walking, swimming, cycling, gardening or strength work, and to keep you comfortable enough to do it consistently.
Across Berkshire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire we help people with arthritis stay walking the dog, playing with grandchildren and enjoying the activities they love. A diagnosis is information, not a sentence.
