Sports massage and deep tissue massage are two of the most requested treatments at our Hungerford clinic, and two of the most commonly confused. People often ask which they should book, so here is a straightforward guide.

What is sports massage?

Despite the name, sports massage is not just for athletes. It is a targeted, purposeful treatment focused on the muscles and soft tissues you use most, whether that is through running, gym training, gardening or a physically demanding job. Techniques are chosen to improve tissue quality, ease tension, support recovery between training sessions and help prevent niggles from becoming injuries.

It is typically focused on specific areas rather than the whole body, and your therapist will often include stretching and aftercare advice as part of the session.

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage uses slower, firmer strokes to reach deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It suits people carrying long-held, generalised tension, often through the shoulders, neck and back, from stress, desk work or years of accumulated habit. Deep does not have to mean painful. Effective pressure is firm but tolerable, and you should always feel able to speak up.

So which should you choose?

  • Training for an event, recovering from exercise, or managing a sport-related niggle: sports massage

  • Chronic stress tension, desk-related tightness, or a general feeling of being knotted up: deep tissue

  • Not sure, or a bit of both: tell us your goals and we will blend approaches

The osteopathy advantage

Because our massage sits within an osteopathic clinic, you get more than a routine rub down. If we find something during treatment that suggests a joint issue, an overload problem or something needing further assessment, we can flag it, explain it and point you in the right direction. Your muscles get the attention, and your whole body gets the benefit of an expert pair of hands.

Not sure which massage suits you best? Book at Laura Fishlock Osteopathy and we will tailor the treatment to your body on the day.
